We had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic watch party for the #AFCON final at Nunhead’s Golden Anchor on February 11, 2024, and we are thrilled to bring you a detailed account from one of our guests, Sienna Bethany for SEASON zine. Here’s her captivating recap of the evening:
“Yesterday’s game served as the perfect date night… until I was used as a shoulder to cry on on the train home. Two hours before the match had started, we had settled into a colourful event space at Nunhead’s Golden Anchor. The vibe was already set with a mouth-watering menu I couldn’t wait to order from and a mash-up of afrobeats, 90s RnB, and Caribbean classics.
People began to filter in wearing green, then the music faded and the hostess blew her whistle – it was time. After a physical first half with many players going down, it was surprising that the only yellow card was given to Nigeria’s manager José Peseiro. In the 38th minute, the room erupted with the Super Eagle celebration as Troost-Ekong scored the first goal for Nigeria.
After the short music break at half time, the second half was less enthusiastic. From yelling at the screen and shaking their heads in their hands, many were not happy with the equaliser from Kessie in the 62nd minute. Then Haller scored in the final ten minutes putting Ivory Coast in the lead. Nigerian fans couldn’t bear to watch and used extra time as a toilet break until the final whistle blew.
Ivory Coast played a phenomenal game and were relentless in the second half. I was amazed by Nwabali’s skills. After the initial grumbles and disappointment, the music grew louder, food flooded in, and more drinks were shared between friends and rivals. Thank you Kaazi for hosting an amazing event!”
